Curve House in Actief Wonen: A Mid-Century Modern-Inspired Kitchen Extension, Streatham
Curve House was recently featured in Actief Wonen (Active Living), a lifestyle magazine that is popular in Belgium.
Belgian lifestyle magazine Actief Wonen has published a feature on our Curve House, a semi-detached property in the Sunnyhill Conservation Area, Streatham. The piece draws out the Mid-century Modern reference points that shaped the design: cherry wood cabinetry that recalls teak, a favoured mid-century material, the terrazzo-effect flooring, the large-format round skylights that replace a typical all-glass side-extension roof, and the Bauhaus-inspired pattern in the timber trellis to the terrace.
Julia Hamson is quoted on the decision to use "round skylights in a solid roof instead of the typical all-glass roof" to manage solar gain on the southern elevation. The skylights are triple-glazed with solar film, throwing pools of light that travel across the kitchen through the day.
Beyond the architectural envelope, the interior was also designed and specified by 4SA throughout. This includes the curved green-tiled kitchen island and splashback, the cherry cabinetry, the bespoke dark green slatted storage wall concealing the ovens and pantry, and all lighting.
