A considered design response, rooted in a deep understanding of the Sunnyhill Road Conservation Area, secured planning consent for a contemporary kitchen extension where subtle curves honour the past while transforming how this family lives today.
Value added
Through spatial analysis at Stage 1, we identified that the client's brief could be fully met with a smaller footprint than the previous scheme had proposed. This delivered a lower overall build cost, freeing budget for higher quality finishes throughout, while still increasing the kitchen by 50%.
As a full RIBA Stages 1 to 7 appointment, we managed every aspect from initial heritage assessment and planning through to construction and completion, giving our clients a single point of expertise and accountability throughout
heritage response
Our conservation expertise then unlocked a more contemporary design outcome than the previous refused scheme with a prior architect, securing consent for large metal frame sliding doors and high quality metal frame windows across the full project. (See our Conservation Area approach in the Journal for more detail)
Sustainability
Windows and the large circular rooflights are all triple glazed to reduce heat loss, thereby reducing energy consumption. The new extension walls and roof are built using timber frame construction. Timber is a renewable resource and generates significantly lower carbon emissions than the concrete blocks typically used in side extensions.
