Zig Zag Roof House in Living Etc: A Sculptural Roof for a Camberwell Victorian Terrace

Living Etc features the Zig Zag Roof House, our extension to a Victorian terrace in Camberwell, in Mandi Keighran's guide to modern home extension ideas. The project opens the piece under the theme of working well with a neighbour, and the article focuses on two things: the dynamic zig-zag roof form, drawn from the angles of the existing property while responding to planning constraints, and the collaborative agreement reached with the adjoining household.

As Julia Hamson explains in the piece, a collaborative approach between neighbours allowed both parties greater height in their respective rear extensions than planning would normally have permitted. The two extensions were built a year apart, but by working together a more dramatic scheme was realised for both houses. It is a clear example of how a planning constraint, handled openly, becomes the thing that gives a project its character. Honouring the past, designing for the future.
